As good as (some say “better than”, actually) a famous bottled ranch dressing. Simple and so creamy, I have started keeping a bottle of this ranch dressing on hand for chicken nugget salads, thin crust pizza. Or anytime a ranch dressing or dip is needed.

Which in our house is pretty much every day.

There are few simple standout ingredients that shouldn’t be substituted. I mean you can do whatever you want, but don’t send me a message that my ranch dressing recipe didn’t turn out.

That’s the end of my Ted talk.

A wooden cutting board with fresh dill on a plate, a jar of mayonnaise, spices, a small bowl of salt, black pepper, and a small glass of milk for garlic ranch dressing.
All the ingredients for garlic ranch. [Not pictured: fresh garlic.]

The garlic is important. Roasted garlic powder adds a deeper flavor, the garlic salt amps up the saltiness with a little garlic. I also give the option to mince up a clove of garlic for even more direct garlic flavor.

Don’t substitute for the mayonnaise. I use Duke’s. You can use Hellman’s or something like it. No Miracle Whip. Only real mayo, please.

Don’t omit the dill. It’s the heart of ranch dressing. You can use dried but fresh is best.

How to make creamy homemade ranch dressing

A bunch of fresh dill leaves on a wooden surface.
Mince the fresh dill and/or thyme if using it.
A bowl contains mayonnaise, yogurt, dried dill, thyme, onion powder, and salt with a spoon, placed on a wooden cutting board next to a small dish of black pepper.
Add the mayonnaise, Greek yogurt, herbs and seasoning…
A bowl of ranch dressing with herbs, partially mixed with milk, while a metal spoon rests inside on a wooden surface.
…then mix until creamy. Add a splash or two of milk if needed.

Ranch dressing final notes

This is a very herby and garlicky ranch. Feel free to use less garlic to your taste.

Maintain the Greek yogurt and mayonnaise ratio if doubling.

The dressing will thicken as it sits. Shake or stir well before using. Add a little milk or water as needed to thin to your desired consistency.
