A bowl of seasoned pretzels is irresistible and I’ve assembled the ultimate pretzel collection here. Whether you are a sweet pretzel snacker or a spicy pretzel lover, I think these barbecue seasoned pretzels are one of my best.

And I have revamped my whole method for mixing them.

I no longer use brown grocery bags which nowadays can be a challenge to find.

Copycat barbecue pretzels

A hand holds a bottle of Meijer Grillers Barbeque Seasoning above a pile of pretzel sticks on a white surface.
The seasoning that is the key to the whole recipe.

This is a riff on a new barbecue flavor of a popular Midwest seasoned pretzel. I did a bit of recipe testing and finally figured out that it takes one unique seasoning to make the whole recipe work! It’s a store-branded barbecue seasoning and while I haven’t tested any others than the one from my local store, I am confident that any one would work with minimal taste variation

One more callout ingredient

Smoked paprika for some warm heat and of course, another layer of smoke.

A better seasoned pretzel method

Line a large bowl with paper towels crosswise. Make sure the ends are higher the the sides of the bowl so you can grab them.
A person pours barbecue seasoning blend from a cup onto a bowl of pretzel sticks lined with paper towels.
After mixing the seasoning blend, sprinkle it evenly over the pretzels in the bowl.

Carefully pour the oil over the seasoning-coated pretzels.
A person presses paper towels around food in a white bowl, wearing a green checkered shirt and gold bracelet.
Enclose the paper towels around the pretzels and carefully lift the whole bundle to distribute the seasoning around the pretzels. Keep shaking and periodically checking to see that the seasoning is coating the pretzels.

Prep Time:5 minutes
Total Time:5 minutes
Servings 10

Ingredients

  • 1 bag butter braid pretzels, 10 oz
  • 3 Tablespoons barbecue seasoning mix, I used Meijer brand
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspooon smoked paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon sugar
  • ¼ cup canola oil

Instructions

  • Grab a roll of paper towels and pull off 2 strips long enough to hang over the edge of the bowl. Set one at the bottom of a large bowl and take the other one and place it in the other direction to cover the bottom of the bowl.
  • Pour the pretzels into the paper towel "bowl".
    1 bag butter braid pretzels
  • Mix all the dressing, seasoning and herbs in a small bowl and sprinkle over pretzels in the bowl.
3 Tablespoons barbecue seasoning mix, ¼ teaspoon kosher salt, ¼ teaspoon garlic powder, ¼ teaspooon smoked paprika, ¼ teaspoon sugar
  • Pour the oil over top of pretzels in bag.
    ¼ cup canola oil
  • Grab the paper towels and enclose them around the pretzels, completely enclosing them. Gently hold closed with both hands and shake the seasonings over the pretzels taking care not to have pretzels pop out of any seams. Keep shaking and check to see if the pretzels are evenly coated and all of the seasoning has been used.
  • Place the paper "bowl" in the real bowl and open the top. Toss the pretzels again with clean hands to make sure that there isn't a lot of seasoning coating the bottom of the paper towels. Once you feel good about it, carefully pull the paper towel out from under the pretzels and leave them in the bowl.
Allow to sit for a couple of hours or overnight. Before serving, stir or shake every so often to make sure the pretzels are evenly coated.
